On the night of December 16, 2023, around 10 p.m., Police Support Officer (PSO) Cameron Rieper defined the true meaning of courage. We’re recognizing him for his notable service that night. Moments like these remind us of our officers’ extraordinary lengths to protect and serve our community.
Fraser Public Safety’s Police Support Officer Cameron Rieper’s Brave Efforts
PSO Rieper was dispatched to a report of a vehicle that had ended up in a ditch within the City of Fraser. Upon arrival, he found a truck with its engine ablaze. The driver was still inside, seemingly unaware of the danger she was in. She did not realize she was stuck and continuously attempted to drive forward until the vehicle overheated and caught fire.
Understanding the urgency of the situation, PSO Rieper quickly approached the vehicle, and without stopping to equip any protective gear, he worked to free the victim from the vehicle. He discovered she was still buckled in and holding onto the steering wheel, with the car filling with smoke and the flames growing.
The situation was perilous, with the vehicle’s tires beginning to explode from the intense heat. Yet, PSO Rieper remained undeterred, removed a seatbelt damaged in the crash, and convinced her to release the steering wheel, allowing him to pull her to safety.
Community Care, Exemplary Service
Once out of immediate danger, PSO Rieper continued to care for her, ensuring she received the necessary medical attention by accompanying her to the hospital. It was later understood she was suffering from dementia, explaining her disorientation and inability to react to the situation independently.
PSO Rieper’s professionalism and quick response on this occasion were exemplary. His actions directly prevented what could have been a tragic outcome. The incident highlighted our work’s critical and often unpredictable nature. Thank you, PSO Rieper, for your commendable action and for setting a high standard of service.
