The University of Michigan Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) is hiring a Police Officer to join their department in Ann Arbor. The department is a full-service law enforcement agency with the responsibility to provide police services to all areas of our campus community. Their mission is to contribute to and promote a safe and secure community while respecting the rights and dignity of all persons using the facilities and programs of the University of Michigan.

Police Officer Position Opening

As a Police Officer, you will ensure public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, promoting good community relations, and patrolling assigned areas to prevent crime. You will also enforce laws, ordinances, and traffic regulations, control crowds, and arrest violators. You may also perform specialized police activities such as criminal investigations, including interviewing witnesses, crime victims, and suspects.

DPSS leads all public safety functions within the university, including police, security, and emergency management, and offers an integrated approach to safety and security, operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. DPSS combines Ann Arbor, Dearborn, and Flint operations to provide students, visitors, faculty, and staff with a safe and secure environment. Through our partnerships across the university and local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, we use a blended service model to meet the needs of our community and exceed expectations.

This position is covered under the collective bargaining agreement between U-M and the Police Officers Association of Michigan union, which contains and settles all matters regarding wages, benefits, hours, and other terms and conditions of employment.

The salary range for a new, probationary Police Officer is $57,512 – $58,662.24. Those who have completed a one-year probationary period are $61,380.80 – $87,672 and can be found in the POAM bargaining agreement.

Responsibilities

The hired Police Officer will complete the following responsibilities:

  • Uphold the highest standards of conduct and customer service while serving and protecting the community and taking measures to prevent crime.
  • Enforce University ordinances and regulations and State and Federal laws.
  • Patrol campus areas for crime prevention, parking, and traffic control and issue citations.
  • Obtain and serve warrants, subpoenas, and other court documents.
  • Identify, apprehend, and arrest suspects.
  • Testify in criminal, civil, and administrative hearings.

Required Qualifications

  • High school or GED equivalent + 2 years of relevant police/military experience, completion of an accredited police training academy or training, and MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable)
  • OR, Associate degree and completion of an accredited police training academy or training and MCOLES license and certification (or certifiable), and You must pass a comprehensive law enforcement background investigation and drug screening, psychological evaluation, and physical examination.

All Division of Public Safety and Security (DPSS) members are considered Campus Security Authorities (CSAs) under The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act. As such, you must report Clery reportable offenses that come to your attention. DPSS employees are required to complete Clery Compliance Training within the first 14 days of employment and annually thereafter.

This position is a 100% regular appointment and is 40 hours per week. The department operates seven (7) days per week and twenty-four (24) hours per day. Work schedules are typically 12-hour shifts, including extended shifts, nights, weekends, afternoons, holidays, and occasional unanticipated overtime. You must pass a thorough background investigation and drug screening.
